Police are investigating a complaint that a 15-year-old girl was beaten about 14 times on the buttocks while being held down by a headmaster and a teacher. Last night Ethel McAdoo, mother of fifth-former Karen, claimed the caning amounted to ‘brutality’.
Mrs McAdoo said that her daughter still had angry red weals on her buttocks from the caning – on Thursday at Camden Square Comprehensive School in Seaham, Co. Durham.
Karen was punished for skipping a woodwork class, which she admits she has done before. The headmaster, Harry Clark, said yesterday: ‘The action was taken entirely within the regulations of the county authority.’
The authority recently told schools the maximum number of cane strokes should be six. The head teachers’ association maintains an older girl should be caned only on the hands.
In a radio interview, Karen said she was taken to a hall and told to hold out a hand. She refused and was forced to bend over a platform. Two women teachers had been called by Mr Clark. She alleged he lifted her coat so “one teacher could get at me properly.”
“I got nine or ten,” Karen added. “Then she stopped, but Mr Clark told the teacher to carry on and I got another four or five. I didn’t cry. I suppose I was just frightened. Afterwards I fell on the floor and started to cry.”
Mrs McAdoo said Karen’s name had been deleted from the woodwork class so she spent the lesson time in the toilet. But the headmaster did not believe her explanation.

It’s sad that caning a naughty bottom is seen today as being ‘assault’. As a retired teacher I have seen so many girls who’d benefit from 6 of the best across the bare bottom.

I am also retired and agree with Jon to the extent that punishment of the bare bottom is appropriate. However, I think there is a danger of cutting of the flesh. So perhaps 18 to 24 of a wide leather would sting sufficiently to teach the requirede lesson.

Hello Father Jon — yes, I agree with you! I know it would have benefitted me greatly — I would be a more disciplined person today! (Literally and figuratively!)
Mark — having been caned quite a lot, I can pretty safely say that six good strokes of the cane won’t cut a healthy young lady’s bottom — just bruise!
But there is no reason why the leather strap or tawse should not be used for the re-education of erring young ladies!

I always caned my wife and daughter.
They turned out great.
Spanking is not allowed in my daughters school, but i told the school to spank her on the bare bum if she did something really bad.
They make it allowed because i told them.

Hmmm … “ganesh” … if you feel like doing the research that the article did or didn’t show up in the London Sunday Times on the 7th of March 1976, you are welcome to!
As for the comments, so far there is only one “story,” that of “John,” who claims that he caned his wife and daughter, and that his daughter’s school is allowed CP on his daughter because of his consent.
There is no way to prove his story. But there certainly were situations like that (a pater familias disciplining both wife and daughter, and schools giving discipline after obtaining parental consent) historically, so while this one individual’s story in unverifiable, it can stand in for examples of this very thing that happened in times recently past (and perhaps still happens.)
