It’s funny how many of them aren’t over-the-knee spankings.  Although I suppose the others are more “beatings” than “spankings.”  There IS a difference!

A spanking is something a parent or uncle or other responsible adult dishes out to an unruly kid.  Or, in past times (and in modern “domestic discipline” households) it was what a husband did to a wife who wasn’t living up to her wifely duties.  It’s done with love, for discipline reasons.  (Obviously, it is also something a guy can pay a Domme to do to him, or any other variation in the BDSM subculture.)

A beating, on the other hand, can be done by anyone to anyone.  It doesn’t have to be done with love, or for discipline.  It can be done for sheer sadistic pleasure!  (And, one hopes, masochistic delight for the beatee!)

For that reason, you can count the use of a tawse or cane as a spanking implement.  Both those formidable weapons (of ass destruction — sorry, had to do it!) can and have been used for loving discipline.  As the belt, birch, switch, wooden spoon, and anything else a parent can grab to deliver the immediate chastisement that is needed.

But of course, a beating can also use those implements.  And it can use hands, too, but not the open-palmed slaps of the spanking — no, “beating” implies the use of fists, maybe even feet as well.

I guess another difference is that a spanking can be a good thing if it’s non-consensual (because what kid would ever consent, or what pissed-off wife would decide, “Oh, yeah, I do need some discipline to improve my behaviour now!”)

But a beating is never a good thing unless it’s consensual, done by two adults who have at least some clue what they are doing.  (This of course, being the rule for reality.  In your fantasies, unconsensual beatings might be just the thing to get you off….)
